Play Your Way to LA: Trip of a lifetime
IT was easily one of the best prizes we’ve ever given away at Golf Link and Ron and Margaret Roberts enjoyed every minute of their time in the US after winning the Play Your Way to L.A promotion in January.
After returning home from the once in a life time trip, the lucky golfers from Yeppoon kindly took the time to pen the following letter outlining just some of the highlights from what was a memorable journey.
Thanks, and best of luck to both Margaret and Ron, and the rest of the newly signed up golfers from Yeppoon Golf Club, in this year’s Genesis Golf Link Cup.
A letter from Ron:
"Margaret and I would like to pass on a huge thank you to GolfLink and the Genesis Golf Link Cup for the opportunity to travel to Los Angeles and play the magnificent Torrey Pines courses and attend the Genesis Open at Riviera Country Club.
Our first game on the North Course was challenging after stepping off the plane only hours earlier. What a way to overcome jet lag – out in the fresh air on a beautifully manicured golf course, with the breeze coming directly off the Pacific Ocean. The only downside was that the Golf Course won and won easily on the day.
After a relaxing day taking in the sights of San Diego the next day and a welcome night’s sleep we were fresh and ready to tackle the South Course. The course was at its best, having staged the Farmers Insurance Open a couple of weeks earlier, evidenced by the dismantling of temporary marquees still going on around the course. Our golf was more consistent, but staying out of the well cared for rough was difficult. Result – the course won convincingly yet again.
The experience of playing on Torrey Pines is one we will savour for a long time.
A drive back to Santa Monica in peak hour traffic was a real eye opener. Five and six lane freeways bumper to bumper for almost 200 kms. Quite different to traffic in Yeppoon and at this time we were quite relieved that we did not take the offer of the use of the Genesis for our time in LA.
Settled in to our hotel at Santa Monica, we were ready to take in the second day’s play of the Genesis Open. Weather was not on the players or spectators side on that day and play was abandoned just after lunch. After obtaining a drink in the hospitality tent, and ready to wait out the rain everyone was told to evacuate the course, because of the huge storm front coming.
Saturday’s weather was a little kinder and play was able to continue for a big part of the day. We took the opportunity to sight see around Los Angeles and make our way to Staples Centre for the Ice Hockey game included with the trip. A great spectacle, fast moving action on the ice and non-stop entertainment whenever there is a break in play.
Weather on the final day of golf held up enough for unfinished third rounds and final rounds to be completed. Dustin Johnson played brilliantly and had the best of the weather to hold off all comers. It is amazing to watch the Pros in action close up, drawing shots around trees, booming drives 300 yards and flopping it out of bunkers. Also to see that they are human and make fundamental errors like the rest of us.
We are now back to reality, will try and put a bit of what we’ve learned into our own golf. The organisation of the trip was first class and we’d like to thank Nick Evans at Tour the Greens for that. The welcoming nature of all involved was really appreciated.
Thanks again GolfLink and the Genesis Golf Link Cup for the opportunity of registering for “Play your way to LA” and providing the prizes. We’re sure that the number of registrations from Yeppoon Golf Club for the Genesis Golf Link Cup in 2017 will have increased as a result of our win.
Thanks again to all involved,
Margaret and Ron Roberts "
