Peter's PB More Than 30 Years In The Making
There are two golf days that stand out clearly in the memory of Week 11 Genesis Golf Link Cup A Grade winner Peter Bendeich and they came more than 30 years apart.
The first is the day he took up the game, a perfect spring afternoon in Sydney in 1986 when invited by a mate to Hurstville Golf Club in the city's South.
And the other is last week’s 48-point round at his home club of Kareela, not far from the venue of his first hit, where he posted his best score in more than 30 years of being a member there.
At 63 years of age, and a ’10 to 14 marker’ for most of his golfing life, that achievement is not lost on Peter who posted his first sub-par nine on his way to victory.
“What other sport could that happen in?” he asks, rhetorically. “To be 63 and be playing for more than 30 years and then suddenly, out of nowhere, you produce your best ever score.
“It’s one of the things that makes golf such a great game.”
Peter says he played rugby for much of his life but by his mid 30’s his body was feeling the stress of contact sport.
A mate who had been suggesting he try golf for some time finally convinced him to come for a hit and it was only a matter of weeks before he was hooked.
“I still remember the day like it was yesterday,” he says. “It was one of those perfect Sydney spring afternoons, just perfect.
“And I was hopeless at it, of course, but I just fell in love with the setting and the peacefulness and the fact nobody was bashing me.
“I played again the next week and the next and before you know it that was it, I was a golfer.”
Of his standout performance last week Peter says there was no obvious reason for it and, like any before him, could only put it down to ‘one of those days’.
“The amazing thing was that the greens had just been cored and were covered in sand so it was hardly the sort of day where you’d expect to have a good score,” he says.
“But I chipped in on the first for birdie and after nine holes I was still 1-under and kind of waiting for it all to come apart.
“But it never did. I just kept making pars and had a couple of bogeys and when it was all said and done it was 2-over off the stick.
“That was the first time I was ever under par for nine holes,” he says. “And that is the best score I’ve ever had at Kareela in more than 30 years as a member.
“So it was a pretty special day, that’s for sure.”
For his excellent play Peter wins a dozen Titleist Tour Soft golf balls.
