Masullo’s Mighty Comeback at Gungahlin Lakes
ACT golfer John Masullo can look back on Sunday October 14, 2018 as the crowning day of his golfing life thus far.
It the day he finished first in C Grade for Week 15 of the Genesis Golf Link Cup.
It was also the day of his greatest-ever round of golf which came in the final round of Gungahlin Lakes Golf Club’s Club Championships.
In the months leading up, John’s form had been significantly down, which was largely attributable to a workplace shoulder injury he suffered in August 2016.
But his luck was about to turn.
John carded a stroke round of 16 over par off a handicap of 28 which translated to a mind-blowing net round of 60 and victory as Gungahlin Lakes’ overall net club champion.
“I had an incredible front nine and back nine; 44, 44 [for] a solid 88,” John said.
His 72-hole net total of 296 gave him victory after a countback.
According to John, the staggering final round could be put down to a “lack of pressure.”
“On the third round, I wasn’t even sure whether I could be there or not. We had an auction and I asked the captain whether I could be in the last group and he confirmed that."
“I got a 12.44pm tee time with a complete new group so there was no pressure. I had no expectations because I had such a horrendous score on the first round."
“Sunday, I just turned up and played and I didn’t know how far back I was."
Teeing off the 10th, John’s final round got the early boost it needed after he found the back portion of the two-tiered green on Gungahlin Lakes’ par-3 11th.
“It was probably a good 20-metre putt down a tier and it went in the hole so I knew my round was going to be something special after that."
For the remaining 16 holes, John said the plan was to simply produce steady play.
There was also the matter of avoiding the abundance of water hazards lurking throughout the northern Canberra layout.
“There’s probably 14 holes with water hazards. So as soon as you put yourself in the mind-frame that you’re going good, things turn, the golfing gods turn on you.”
John can’t remember ever coming close to a net score of 60.
The total is even more impressive considering the shoulder injury he suffered more than two years earlier.
“I fell off the back of a truck and landed on the point of my right shoulder which tore some ligaments.”
“I’ve been working grinding out really bad scores for a long time and that’s probably the best score I’ve had.”
For his efforts in Week 15 John has won a dozen Titleist Tour Soft Golf Balls.
