David Collins takes out Genesis Golf Link Cup Final
On a day that was made for golf, David Collins from Coolangatta Tweed Heads Golf Club has taken out the 2016 Genesis Golf Link Cup.
Under a cloudless sky and in 30-degree heat, the 11-marker posted 33 points on the tough New South Wales Golf Club layout and held off several challengers to claim the Cup.
Margaret Ivory from Gisborne GC scored 32 points to top B Grade but couldn’t score at the death to place one hand on the trophy, with Sheena Gunn also coming close on 31 points overall.
Big hitting Joel Riddle from Sawtell GC took out C Grade and the long-drive prize on the 18th, a genuine 250 metre drive into a stiff north-easterly breeze, with Maree Killeen coming second in C Grade.
Special mentions for shot of the day go to Meg Pratt for sinking a 20-metre putt for birdie on the 17th hole, and to Harry MacAskill for an outrageous 3-wood to five metres on the 18th that he described as, “Tiger Woods-like”.
Nick Thornton, Golf Link General Manager said, “We congratulate our 16 finalists on reaching the final at New South Wales Golf Club – an outstanding achievement in itself with over 98,000 registered golfers in the 2016 Genesis Golf Link Cup. “
“Congratulations to David Collins our 2016 Champion!
We thank Genesis, Callaway Golf and Golf Box for supporting this wonderful event and especially to Genesis for their ongoing commitment and contribution to Australian golf.”
