With a long list of championship courses and outstanding tourism attractions, South East Queensland is one of Australia’s prized golf regions for individuals and families. And the drive from the Gold Coast in the south to Brisbane in the north is our latest Genesis Great Golf Road Trip.

The Gold Coast offers premium golf to the public. In the south-west suburb of Robina, The Glades Golf Club is one of two Gold Coast courses designed by Greg Norman.

“He likes to start with an easy hole, which our first is, and he doesn’t waste any time in making it tough…we go straight to the second…250 metres off the tee, we find water that runs right across the fairway,” said The Glades’ Golf Operations Manager Todd Sleep.

“A feature of Greg is he loves his bunkers and they are everywhere.”

From one golf legend to another, Jack Nicklaus’s fingerprints are all over Lakelands Golf Club. The inner Gold Coast layout – which opened in 1997 – was the first course in Australia designed by the Golden Bear.

If Lakelands is proud of that fact then, about 30 minutes north, Sanctuary Cove Golf Club is thrilled to call itself home to Australia’s only Arnold Palmer signature course. Sanctuary Cove features 36 holes including Palmer’s ‘members only’ Pines Course.

The King isn’t the only Masters Champion with links to Sanctuary Cove – it’s also where 2013 champion Adam Scott fine-tunes his game when he’s back on home soil.

“All through winter we’ve just had perfect weather,” said Golf Operations Manager Ryan Gailey.

“We haven’t had any rain which we probably wouldn’t mind a little bit – but yeah, the weather here at Sanctuary Cove is just perfect for golf.”

Just a few minutes away is the revered Links Hope Island, where membership has spiked more than 35 per cent in the past year and a half. And with construction of a 5-star hotel set to begin in 2018, Hope Island’s international brand will continue to thrive.

“We’ve seen increased patronage from China and usual patronage from Japan,” said Ashlee Kachel, Links Hope Island’s Golf Manager.

“We get a lot of trans-Tasman travel as well, a lot of visitors, especially in these winter months, that come over from New Zealand.”

As you make your way towards Brisbane, the list of championship golf courses continues.

Just to name a few, there’s Royal Queensland, Nudgee, Brookwater, 36 holes at Indooroopilly Golf Club, and the final stop on this Genesis Great Golf Road Trip – Brisbane Golf Club.

Dating back to 1896, Brisbane Golf Club boasts a beautiful heritage-listed clubhouse and is preparing to host the Queensland Open in late October for the second of three years running.

According to Director of Golf, Joe Janison, Brisbane Golf Club’s putting surfaces are entirely unique in Australia.

“The Brisbane Golf Club is the only course in Australia with Champion greens, which is on courses such as Quail Hollow and Pine Valley, and they were established roughly four years ago and have started to really mature now,” Janison said.
